"What moonshot does an age of rising authoritarian-fascism tell us that
we need to get serious about? Building a world where every life has
dignity, stability, security. Nobody — and I mean nobody — should live
the way that Americans live: terrified that they might lose their job,
and with it goes their healthcare, their savings are nonexistent, and
soon enough, they might find themselves on the street. Americans rarely
question any of that — but they should. What good is a modern society if
people go on living in despair and fear? That way, they become easy
meat for demagogues. Democracy cannot sustain itself. So if we are
serious about democracy, then, too, we must create a world where every
life — every one — has the basics, and never lives in want and fear
again."
